Spring Allergies Remedy ~ The Netti

Spring has sprung! And with that comes flowers blooming, pollens circulating the air, and unfortunately for me allergies. I began the week, Monday, waking up with a scratchy sore throat and my nose stuffy. Yuck. I told myself I’m not getting sick, this will pass. I jumped out of bed and went straight for my netti pot…the best holistic remedy for allergies or anything nasal related. It’s like rinsing off your body, rinse your nasal passage! I filled it with some warm water put some kosher salt in it, mixed, and began flooding my nasal passages. There are certain recipes, saline solutions, for the Netti, but I just mix and blend at will. Not the most pleasant feeling, but it works. I did it every morning, sometimes twice a day, and by Friday I was feeling great. I added some Echinacea and vitamin C, a few emergency packs, and lots of herbal tea and lemons. Not going to lie, I did take benedryl for a couple nights to help me get some ZZzzZZzzz’s. Health restored in a few days and back to my own fabulous me! It just took a netti pot, some vitamins, and a little bit of hot yoga to sweat it out. Hello Spring! It’s good to get into a routine of using the netti pot, especially if you are cleansing or the seasons are changing. It’s a fabulous Ayurveda tool! It’s weird at first, maybe even gross, and unpleasant, but once you feel the benefits, you will be hooked. No pill, just pure natural h20 and some salt, thank you Mother Earth! But life gets busy, time is short, and mornings are hectic…you can always count on the netti for a rising discomfort, allergies, or nose issue.

Some Netti Pot Benefits

  • It is 100% natural and totally holistic
  • It is cheap
  • Solves sinus issues and drains the bad stuff
  • Helps aid sinus headaches
  • Improves smell and clears your nasal passages
  • Provides instant sinus relief
  • It’s easy, simple, and has only positive side effects, and no drugs!
  • Helps clear allergies, bronchitis, asthma, stuffy nose, running nose and more
  • Dr Oz even recommends it!
  • You can get a netti pot everywhere: drug store, health food stores, online, etc…

Netti Pot Best Practices:

– Use warm water….not hot (you will burn yourself) not cold (brain freeze, discomfort, etc)

– Use non Iodized salt and maybe baking soda, mix with water ( 1/2 teaspoon to 8 oz water recommended)…give or take a little. I don’t use baking soda, but I’ve heard good things. Iodized salt can cause irritations overtime.

– Always lean your head to the side, over a sink, and pour netti through opposite nasal passage. The water should run down opposite nostril. If you feel it in your mouth/throat you are not tilting your head enough.

Inspiration~

“Our best work, our finest moments, our joy happen when we’re centered, listening to and trusting ourselves, allowing our hearts and souls to guide us. They happen when we allow ourselves to fully, completely, and in love, be who we are…Stay open. Keep loving yourself. Know you are a vital part of a living universe. Watch how much better, how much kinder life is, as your grow in peace and harmony with yourself. See how much more love is mirrored in the universe since you committed to loving yourself.”

Irish Mint Smoothie

Happy St Patricks day! My favorite color is green so I love this holiday just because it’s an excuse to get green. On this Irish day there will be no green beer of shots of Jamison for me though. I think I over partied on this holiday in college, when our bars would open at 6am and my roommates and I would be waking up with mimosas and bailey’s and coffee. Oh those college days.  So, in honor of this Irish Holiday, I’ve blended up a tasty mint green smoothie.I was pressed for time, so pardon the lack of presentation. It was quite delicious! Almost better than a Shamrock shake from McDonalds, an old childhood tradition.

Some vanilla almond milk

A banana or two (Frozen if you can)

Add some mint leaves

A handful of Spinach

Option: add some chocolate chips for a more milkshake treat

Irish Coffee

I’m not a green beer drinker, a Jamison shot taker, or a fan of cabbage. But I love St Patty’s day, celebrating the Irish, and having a national green day. What a pick me up for your week or maybe a hangover remedy from your Irish celebration? In honor of the Irish ~ try Irish coffee!

Irish Coffee

1 cup of coffee

Mix in about  1-1.5 oz Whiskey

Add some [heavy] cream

Option to add a teaspoon of brown sugar for sweetness

The heavy cream can be whipped into whip cream, then put in fridge to chill. Brew the coffee and combine with the whiskey and sugar. Mix well and allow sugar to dissolve. Top off the coffee mixture with some whipped cream. Use the back of a warm spoon to help drop the whipped cream perfectly on the surface of the coffee, without breaking into the mixture (this may take some time to master).  Enjoy your nice drink to help wake you up!

You can also add Mint Liquor, instead or in addition to the Whiskey. This will also transform it into a festive green drink. If the Whiskey taste rubs you the wrong way, or perhaps is too potent for a morning pick up, try Bailey’s and Coffee. One of my favorites! Sometimes my weekend treat is walking along the beach with a cup of coffee in hand and topped off with some Baileys. Search around, mix it up, and find your perfect Irish cocktail.

Baileys & Coffee

Fresh brewed coffee

About 1 oz of Baileys

Option to add: sugar and/or whipped cream

Stir and mix and enjoy!

I had my first real experience with irish coffee in San Francisco at The Buena Vista.  If you are ever in the area you must go see this hidden and historical gem. Located near fisherman’s Warf, next to the Powell-Hyde Cable Cars, it’s a great place to stop in or meet up with a friend. It has been in the same spot since 1975 and is still always bustling with customers and tourist. Known for their Irish Coffee recipe created in 1952 by the owner of the Buena Vista and a travel writer who dared to mock recipe from the Shannon airport in Ireland , the pub has mastered the concoction after spending nights mixing and even flying over to Irish land.

“Success was theirs! With the recipe now mastered, a sparkling clear, six-ounce, heat-treated goblet was chosen as a suitable chalice.” Read more about famed Irish Coffee drink and how to recreate.

I have not been to Ireland yet, so I cannot attest to having a real Irish Coffee in Ireland, but this is delightful and surprisingly tasty. I recommend it to any SF tourist, native, or local. Spend your afternoon at The Buena Vista!
